Allantoin
- nature identical
A soothing, healing and skin conditioning agent valued for use in creams and lotions for these properties and as a skin protectant. Allantoin is found in many plants, such as comfrey, horse chestnut and bearberry. Although allantoin can be isolated from these plants, the allantoin used in cosmetics and personal care products is a manufactured ingredient. The allatoin we stock is RonaCare® Allantoin, a 'nature-identical' (a complete synthesis of the original structure) product free from animal-derived raw materials. A white, odourless, crystalline powder, soluble in water and alcohol. Nontoxic, nonirritating and nonallergenic. It has been called a counter irritant that helps alleviate the irritating effects of soap, surfactants, oils, acidic and alkaline ingredients. Allantoin works by hastening the healing processes of the body, helping the skin to help itself. In texts such as the Merck Index, British Pharmaceutical Codex and the United States Dispensatory it has also been termed a cell proliferant, chemical debrider and epithelization stimulant. It has been said that allantoin can clean away necrotic tissue, speeding the growth of new healthy tissue. Since it stimulates healthy new tissue growth, healing epithelization may take place. The FDA has only recognized it as a skin protectant, not as a wound healing agent. As a skin protectant, allantoin has long been known to enhance creams and lotions. It can be incorporated into all kinds of cosmetics including shampoos, foam baths, baby powders and lipsticks. It is also used in various dental preparations and in topical pharmaceuticals. While allantoin can be used in OTC products (cosmeceuticals) and statements made about it's properties, when added to a cosmetic product and no claims are made, the product remains a cosmetic. Use rate is 0.5 - 2.0% w/w. Small concentrations can be added to the water phase, to incorporate more than 0.5% into an emulsion, add during the cooling phase once the temperature has dropped below 50°C/122°F
According to the manufacturer:
"RonaCare® Allantoin: Promote Cell Proliferation & Skin Repair
The main function of allantoin is to stimulate cell proliferation and to promote skin repair by enhancing the rebuilding of intact granulation tissue. In pharmaceutical applications, allantoin is used e.g. in the treatment of ulcers, slow-healing wounds, and burns. In cosmetics and skincare applications, allantoin is used as an additive in numerous preparations where it displays its anti-irritant, cleansing, and healing properties. Allantoin is non-toxic, non-irritating and effective in low concentrations. In hair care, the keratolytic action of allantoin is used to break up dandruff scales. The amphoteric character of allantoin prolongs keratolytic activity. EMD Chemicals RonaCare® Allantoin is effective at low concentration levels.
Efficacy Studies: -Faster renewal of the upper layer of the epidermis (stratum corneum)   -Highest level of efficacy of allantoin is achieved when used topically   -Skin repair after: UV induced skin irritation, chemically induced skin irritation, mechanically induced skin irritation.
Key Properties and Claims   -Accellerated wound healing through cell proliferation   -Soothing, cleansing and healing of the skin   -Effective at low concentration levels   -Breaks up dandruff scales due to keratolytic action"

Arrowroot Powder
- Maranta arundinaceae
Arrowroot is a perennial plant native to the West Indies but also grown in other regions including South Asia, South America, Australia, Africa and the US. When the plant is less than a year old, the starch is extracted from the rhizomes, which are washed and pulped and then mixed with water. The fibers are hand-wrung to capture the liquor and the starch is dried in the sun. This starch from the rhizome/root of the plant has traditionally been used as a medicinal herb, including for digestive disorders, as well as food. Most are familiar with arrowroot cookies, which is but one use as a flour. For those who cannot tolerate gluten, it's the perfect replacement for wheat flour. As a starch it has similar uses to cornstarch and others, but with other advantages. Acidic ingredients like fruit do not affect it's ability to make clear sauces and glazes and it can be used to thicken foods at much lower temperatures than other starches without affecting flavour. It's ability to hold up well to freezing makes it uniquely suitable for use in recipes that will be frozen. It's even used in homemade ice cream to prevent ice crystal formation. For use as a starch or flour alternative, 1:1 for replacing flour and 2:1 for cornstarch. When used in something like a stir fry, first mixed with a cool liquid like chicken broth, it doesn't need to be boiled to thicken and there's no starchiness to cook off. For use in cosmetics this non-toxic fine white powder is an alternative to talc. Used to help moisturizers penetrate the skin. Topically has been used to soothe bites and sores either as a home remedy paste or in ointments or oral medicines. One of the most popular veggie / vegan powders for use in natural products including body powders. Product of Thailand.

BHT - FCC
- Butylated Hydroxytoluene
An anti-oxidant used to extend the shelf life and delay rancidity of oils and fats in foods and cosmetics. Used to treat oils for soap. It is a white crystalline powder similar in appearance to refined sugar. It has a high melting point and must be well mixed into the oil(s). To use in soapmaking, heat up a portion of the oil(s) to be treated to 160°F+ and slowly stir the BHT into the oil. When it is totally dissolved and well mixed, stir the oil into the rest of your oils and stir well. This is done prior to adding the lye/water to the oils. Usage rate for BHT is .01% - .1% w/w (by weight), .05% w/w is typically used for treating soapmaking oils. For treating 10 pounds of oils you would use approximately .08 oz. or 2.27g of BHT, or about 2 tsp. Best used in soap along with tetrasodium EDTA, as the EDTA ties up the metal ions and helps the BHT to work better, but also BHT alone will tend to yellow the soap. BHT can be used to treat oils for use in cosmetics other than soap. Liquid oils with shorter shelf lives are best treated as soon as you receive or open them.
Borax
- Pentahydrate
Sodium borate. Borax works in many personal care products such as cosmetic creams, skin lotions, hair shampoos, dyes and gels, bath salts and denture cleaners. Used as a water softener and laundry product, like baking soda has many cleaning uses. Is a mild alkali, used in combination with beeswax, that forms a kind of soap that is used as an emulsifier in creams (water in oil emulsions). The ratio of beeswax to borax is 16:1 to 20:1. When combined with guar gum and water it forms a gel. Found in recipes for laundry and other soaps, used in combination with sodium carbonate in commercial bath salts and as an alternative to automatic dishwasher detergent. Also used as an insecticide. There are different kinds of borax, for most uses it doesn't matter which one you use. We used to carry the tetraborate/tetrahydrate, but are now stocking 5 mol granualar pentahydrate, which is also anhydrous. Tetra means there are 4 molecules of water, penta is 5, deca is 10. So if your formula is based on the tetraborate borax, you would use 1.45 times as much of the pentahydrate or 1.9 times as much of the decahydrate. Canadian cosmetic regulations state concentration of borax in cosmetics should not exceed 5%. Appearance: White granules crystalline. Common Name: Borax Pentahydrate, Borax 5 mol Granular. Cocoa Butter
- Theobroma cacao - Pure Cocoa Butter
A creamy yellow, hard brittle butter from cocoa beans. Used in many foods, cosmetics, soaps, natural products and health foods. A primary ingredient in lotion/massage bars, lip balms, lip butters, creams, lotions and body butters. Useful as a thickener, skin conditioner and emollient. Can be used alone as a lip moisturizer or massage oil as well. Melts on contact with the skin due to it's melting point being close to body temperature. Has an exceptionally long shelf life.
This is regular food grade cocoa butter, the type most widely used in foods and cosmetics. Kessko cocoa butter is pure and double filtered. Deodourized, so it has less of the characteristic chocolate aroma, and it won't interfere with other scents in a formula. In easy to use chips form (small flat pieces), standard packaging is a 5 kg box.   Specific gravity: 0.964   Melting point: 34.1°C/93°F   SAP value: 193.8  Product of Germany
Cocoa Butter, Raw
- Theobroma cacao - Raw Natural
A dark brown, firm butter from cocoa beans. This is the rawest form of cocoa butter, before it is fractionated into regular cocoa butter and cocoa liquor. Has the appearance of dark chocolate. Rich and decadent. Contains cocoa mass polyphenol (CMP) and elements normally removed in further processing. This grade of cocoa butter is desirable for exotic formulations. Is also used for healing purposes. Can be used for it's natural colour in creams, lotions and other body care products. As little as 3% in a lotion formula will make it the colour of a chocolate milkshake. The raw cocoa butter is excellent when combined with our wild crafted cocoa butter in a formulation, providing the rich colour of the raw with the mouth watering natural aroma of the wild crafted. Cocoa butters are used in many foods, most notably chocolate, cosmetics and soaps. A primary ingredient in lotion/massage bars, lip balms, lip butters and body butters. Useful as a thickener, skin conditioner and emollient.  Product of West Africa

A wonderful addition to soaps, both cp and rebatches. Can be used in place of cow's or goat's milk. When using in soap, add to your oils and subtract a similar amount from your water total. One 400 ml can is adequate in a 20 pound batch of soap, but more or less can be used. Most popularly used in the kitchen. Can replace most of the water when cooking rice to make a flavourful coconut rice. Also a wonderful addition to Thai style curry dishes. We stock Western Natural premium organic coconut milk that does not contain any preservatives. Ingredients: organic coconut milk, guar gum. Product of Thailand.
Coconut Oil, Fractionated - Caprylic/Capric Triglycerides
- Cocos nucifera
One of the favorite oils of massage therapists for it's feel and resistance to rancidity (thus no rancid odors in sheets/table covers over time). A clear, thin liquid oil that is non-greasy and rapidly absorbs into the skin. The lighter fractions are physically separated (fractionated) from the whole coconut oil or obtained by esterifying the acids with glycerin. Fractionated coconut oil contains only small, saturated, or lower fatty acids and removes the C12 and C14 (lauric and myristic) acids. Is widely used in many cosmetics and blends as an emollient, known by it's cosmetic ingredient name of caprylic/capric triglyceride, especially where a long shelf life without the addition of anti-oxidants, or a lighter less greasy oil is desirable. Not derived from GMO sources, not irradiated. Product of Malaysia.
Coconut Oil RBD
- Cocos nucifera - RBD
An odourless oil obtained from copra, or dried coconut meat. Refined, bleached and deodourized. A white solid at lower temperatures, clear liquid when melted. Has a melting point of 76°F, however hydrogenated versions are available commercially with a higher melting point of 92°F. Coconut oil (and olive oil) are good oils for use in cooking, frying and sauteing as they do not transform into trans-fatty acids upon heating. Coconut oil can be used to replace butter or margarine in recipes and is wonderful when flavoured with essential oils. Useful as an emollient in all kinds of cosmetics. Coconut oil has long been used for skin and hair care in the Pacific islands. Due to it's solidity at lower temperatures, it makes a nice base for massage and body oils. Coconut oil has also been used alone as a tanning oil. Widely used in soapmaking for it's lathering properties at 20-30% or less of the soaping oils. Provides fast bubbles and a soap that will lather even in sea water. Specific gravity: 0.924   Melting point: 24.4°C/76°F   SAP value: 268.0 Contains only pure coconut oil, from Malaysia &/or Indonesia &/or Philippines, packaged in Canada.
Coconut Oil, Virgin Organic
- Cocos nucifera - Natural

Colours, Liquid

FD&C colours are approved for use in food, drugs and cosmetics. D&C colours are approved for use in drugs and cosmetics. The colours we carry are liquid for ease of use in toiletries and soap. For best results when trying to colour dry products like bath salts or bath seltzer mixes, mix with a little water (and/or glycerin if desired) and spray on the salts while mixing well. When used in most toiletries, including lotions, bath products and bath salts the colours are true, but in some products the effects may vary. Some FD&C colours are pH sensitive and will yield different results in cp soap, m&p and bath salts. The green does not do well in alkaline products like soap, however we have a green more suitable for use in higher pH formulations. The Teal Green is D&C Green 5 and works well in soap. Can be combined with the yellow to make other shades of green. All the other colours are FD&C. All the colours can be blended and used in varying amounts to yield different shades and effects. To make brown mix 2 parts orange, 1 part yellow and 1 part black. 1 kg of the liquid colours measures roughly 950 ml. Liquid colours have a shelf life of 12 to 18 months when stored properly at 68°F - 77°F. Recommended use rate: start evaluation at 0.1% and adjust accordingly. All these water soluble colours are in a base of water and propylene glycol, the other ingredients are listed under each color (INCI abbreviated names for FD&C colours):
Black Colour - Red 40, Blue 1, Yellow 5.
Dark Blue Colour - Blue 1.
Sky Blue Colour - Blue 1.
Green Colour - Yellow 5, Blue 1.
Orange Colour - Yellow 6.
Peach Colour - Yellow 5, Yellow 6.
Pink Colour - Red 3.
Purple Colour - Red 40, Blue 1.
Red Colour - Red 40.
Teal Green Colour - Green 5
Yellow Colour - Yellow 5.
Further information about the FD&C and D&C organic certified cosmetic dyes used to make our colours:
Blue 1 - Do not use above pH 8
Red 3 - Do not use below pH 6
Red 40 - Light and pH stable
Yellow 5 - Light and pH stable
Yellow 6 - Light and pH stable
Green 5 - Light and pH stable
Please note that "do not use" doesn't mean they can't be used in the mentioned pH ranges, but rather refers to the fact that the colours will morph. For example, Blue 1 when used in the 9.5 - 10 pH of cp soap will not stay blue, but will turn a rich royal purple (dark blue colour). Photos of our test results using each color in both cp and m&p soaps can be viewed here.

Dipropylene glycol is a condensation product of 1, 2-propylene glycol. Clear, colorless, almost odourless, oily liquid. Miscible with common organic solvents and water. Less hygroscopic than diethylene and ethylene glycols and less volatile than ethylene glycol. Specific gravity: 1.021 - 1.025  Boiling point: 230°C/445°F.    Solidification point: -40°C    BP/USP grade. Product of Germany.
EDTA, Tetrasodium
- Versene* 220 Crystals / Tetrasodium EthyleneDiamineTetraAcetate tetrahydrate
The tetrasodium salt of EDTA, the most suitable form for use in soap and most cosmetics. Can be used in a wide variety of personal care products to increase effectiveness and improve stability. In soap to improve hard water performance, rinsability and shelf life. A chelating agent, EDTA ties up metal ions in products, helping the anti-oxidant to work better and protecting other ingredients. Na4EDTA is the strongest, most versatile and widely used chelant for controlling metal ions over a broad pH range. It will not chelate monovalent metal ions such as sodium or potassium, but will chelate most multivalent metal ions (Fe, Cu, Mn, Ca, Mg, Zn) in a 1:1 molar ratio. The chelation reaction is virtually instantaneous in most cases. Calcium and other alkaline earth metals are most effectively chelated above pH 6. Tetrasodium EDTA chelates most transition metals below pH 12. Stable under widely varying conditions of temperature, acidity, alkalinity and the presence of other chemicals. It is attacked by strong oxidizing agents such as hypochlorite bleach however. If BHT is used as the anti-oxidant in your soap formula, it's recommended to use EDTA as well or the soap will tend to yellow if BHT is used alone. Appearance:  White crystalline powder    pH:  11 (1 wt% solution) Molecular Weight: 452.2 Water Solubility: 50.7 wt% at 25°C/77°F   Chemical Formula: C10H12N2O8Na4 or 4H2O CAS: 13235-36-4
Use method: Add to water phase of emulsions, or water/lye solution for soap. Conversion: To replace 1 measure (pound, kilo, gram) of Versene 100 (liquid), use 0.466 of Versene 220 Crystals. So for example if your formula currently calls for 100g of Versene 100 liquid, you would use 46.6g of Versene 220 Crystals. Conversely, to replace 1 measure of Versene 220 Crystals, you would use 2.15 times as much Versene 100 liquid. Use Rate: Based on the manufacturer's recommended use rate of 0.25% w/w for Versene 100, it would be 0.117% w/w for Versene 220 Crystals. In comparison to Versene 100, Versene 220 Crystals are useful in formulating dry products, or products where total water content must be kept to a minimum. There are also freight savings over the liquid EDTA. Versene 220 Crystals are a higher purity alternative to both the liquid Versene 100 and Versene powders. Because it is a crystallized product, it doesn't contain any of the impurities present in the powders or other EDTA products.
Why use Versene EDTA? Chelating agents provide reliable protection for the quality and shelf life of your products, prevent metals from reacting with your product or process, improve hard water performance, soften process water, keep metal ions in solution, offer unique light, thermal and pH stability, and since they're effective at low concentrations, reduces your ingredient costs.

Glycerin 99.5%
- USP (Kosher)
Also called vegetable glycerin(e). Chemically an alcohol, glycerol, glycerin is a sweet, thick, clear liquid. Glycerin is a by product of soap manufacture, when you combine fats/oils (triglycerides) and a base, the end product is soap and glycerin. The glycerin comes off the triglyceride molecule. In commercial soap manufacture they remove all the glycerin because it's a valuable commodity to sell separately. Commercially glycerin is used in many industries and applications including the food industry and as a food grade machinery lubricant. In handcrafted soap the glycerin remains (which is why all handcrafted soap-opaque or otherwise-is true "glycerin" soap), but also extra glycerin can be added. Glycerin is used along with sugar and alcohol to make transparent soap. A valuable cosmetic ingredient as a solvent, humectant and emollient. When used as a humectant and to prevent drying of the product in lotions and creams, use rate is 2-5% of the water phase. Too much glycerin in an emulsion can produce a sticky feel. The chief ingredient in "edible" products found in love shops; when applied to the skin (and blown on) it feels warm. 1 L of glycerin weighs about 1280g. The glycerin we carry is a high quality vegetable source, refined, Kosher and USP/BP grade. Derived from non-GMO palm based oils. Not irradiated. Product of Malaysia.

Guar Gum
- Cyamopsis tetragonoloba
A high molecular weight carbohydrate derived from the natural seed of the guar plant. Guar has been cultivated in India for centuries and India accounts for approximately 80% of the total produced worldwide. Guar seeds are separated from the plant and dried. Refined Guar splits are first obtained by roasting, dehusking, and polishing. These splits are then pulverized and tailor made in various mesh sizes and of required viscosity for usage in different industries. Guar Gum powder is manufactured by mechanical extraction of endosperm from the guar seed. The most important property of guar gum is its ability to hydrate rapidly in cold or hot water to attain uniform and very high viscosity at relatively low concentrations. Another advantage is that it provides full viscosity even in cold water. As well as being the most cost effective stabilizer and emulsifier, it enhances texture, enhances mouth feel, and controls crystal formation due to superior water binding properties. Inert in nature and is resistant to oil, greases, and solvents. It also has excellent synergy with several other hydrocolloids, particularly Xanthan Gum. A product with diverse applications including as a thickener, stabilizer, emulsifier, moisture retention agent, dough conditioner, gelling agent, binder and suspending agent. Used in many industries including foods and cosmetics. Used as a binder in making incense. Has 5-8 times the thickening power of starch. Can be combined with borax and water to form a gel.
