Bixa orellana An extract of annatto seeds and cornstarch. Also called achiote or achuete, a natural food coloring and spice used in Eastern and Mexican cuisine. The annatto we carry is both water and oil soluble and can be added to the lye/water or oil in soap for different shades of yellow and orange. Added to the lye/water it can yield a very pale yellow, added to the oils can give a rich butter yellow. Annatto is permanently listed as a cosmetic color additive exempt from certification by the FDA, with no restrictions for cosmetic use. The color is light fast.
